Greener Moves: How DSPs Can Drive Sustainability in Global Mobility

Sustainability is the buzzword of the decade, and Global Mobility is no exception. Everyone wants to be greener, cleaner, and more eco-friendly- even in the world of relocation. But let’s be honest: moving people across cities, countries, and continents isn’t exactly a low-impact activity. From packing materials to long-haul flights, the carbon footprint of a relocation feels more like a carbon stomp.

For Destination Service Providers (DSPs), making a real impact can feel like trying to navigate a new city without Google Maps-challenging, to say the least. Unlike relocation management companies (RMCs) or corporate clients who can track shipping emissions or set sustainability policies, DSPs don’t have as many direct levers to pull. But that doesn’t mean we’re off the hook!

IOR is committed to responsible practices that make a difference. As a result, IOR employees and contractors receive ongoing training and may be asked to provide reports and examples of how programs align with our sustainability efforts.

During our annual IOR “Globie” Awards Ceremony for our network of consultants and trainers, we crown a winner of our IOR Spotlight Award for Sustainability, honoring a consultant who consistently delivers IOR DS programs in a sustainable and eco-friendly manner.

To ensure our consultants are making eco-friendly choices, we provide a video tutorial that outlines specific ways they can contribute- such as minimizing unnecessary trips, using hybrid or electric vehicles, and guiding transferees toward LEED-certified housing. Even small choices, like opting for digital paperwork over printed documents or recommending sustainable neighborhood options, add up over time.

Our on-the-ground field consultants even report on key sustainability measures for each destination services program, including:

  • Utilizing public transportation, carpooling, biking, or electric/hybrid vehicles during accompanied services.
  • Combining tasks and appointments to reduce commute time.
  • Securing properties with LEED certification or energy-efficient appliances and lighting.
  • Providing electronic copies of key documentation.

As part of our commitment to sustainability, IOR shares the results with our partners on a yearly basis and we continue to refine and expand how we track sustainability efforts.

Sustainability in Global Mobility isn’t about perfection; it’s about making smarter choices where we can. One hybrid car ride, one energy-efficient apartment, and one less printed map at a time.
